Ireland’s Presidential Race and the Gen Z Question

Ireland’s Presidential Race and the Gen Z Question

What’s up EqualityWorx fam? The presidential election season is heating up and, honestly, it’s a bit of a circus. The Áras is up for grabs, the rumour mill is spinning, and every day there’s a new headline about who might (or might not) want the gig. For Gen Z and second-gen Ireland, this isn’t just about who gets to shake hands with world leaders or pose with the dogs at the gates. It’s about whether the next president will actually get us, or just keep the Áras as a museum for the same old faces.

Michael D. Higgins: The GOAT

First, let’s talk about the legend we’re all supposed to follow. Michael D. Higgins isn’t just a president – he’s basically Ireland’s collective granddad, poet-in-chief, and the only politician who could make a speech about climate change sound like a bedtime story. Fourteen years in the Áras, and he’s still got a 64% approval rating. He’s called out the government on housing, championed equality, and made the presidency feel like it actually matters. Whoever steps up next? Good luck filling those shoes.

Who’s Running? Who’s Not? (And Why Should We Care?)

Right now, it’s all speculation and not a single poster in sight. The big parties – Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin – are all keeping their cards close. There’s chatter about old-school politicians, a few activists, maybe even an artist or two. But let’s be honest: the media’s obsessed with the usual suspects.

And then there’s Joe Duffy. After weeks of “Will he? Won’t he?” the Liveline legend shut it down on social: “Thanks, but to be absolutely clear I am NOT seeking a nomination from any politicians, local or national, for the office of President of Ireland.” That’s a hard pass from Joe, and a reminder that being popular on the radio isn’t the same as wanting to be president.

Why Should Gen Z and Second-Gen Ireland Even Care?

Here’s the thing: if you’re under 30 in Ireland, you’re probably used to being ignored by politicians. Only 2% of TDs are under 30, even though you make up almost 40% of the country. No wonder 63% of Irish youth think the state isn’t working for them. The presidency could be different. It’s a chance to see someone who actually looks like you, talks like you, and gets what it means to be young, broke, stressed, and maybe not 100% “typically Irish.”

Gen Z wants a president who:

  • Shows up at Pride and anti-racism rallies, not just the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

  • Uses the platform to call out injustice, not just read safe speeches.

  • Actually reflects the new Ireland – multicultural, multi-faith, and proud of it.

  • Isn’t afraid to answer tough questions on TikTok, not just RTÉ.

  • Does more than talk – backs youth initiatives, mental health, and real social justice.

Second-gen youth want someone who gets what it’s like to straddle cultures, challenge bias, and push for a more inclusive Ireland. You’re not asking for a miracle – just a president who actually sees you.

The Media Buzz: Same Old, Same Old?

Let’s be honest, the coverage so far is all about nostalgia. Former ministers, TV personalities, establishment figures. Where are the young candidates? Where are the voices from migrant, Traveller, or LGBTQ+ communities? If the next president is going to connect with us, the media – and the candidates – need to reflect the Ireland we actually live in, not just the Ireland our parents remember.

Imagine This: A Real Gen Z/Second-Gen President

So, a president who hosts open forums with young activists at the Áras. Who pushes for mental health reform and climate action from the bully pulpit. Who highlights the achievements of new Irish communities and calls out racism, sexism, and inequality – loudly and unapologetically. Someone who makes the Áras a place for everyone, not just the elite. That’s the kind of leadership you’re hungry for. Not just a figurehead, but a champion.

Why This Election Matters

This isn’t just another election. It’s a crossroads. The next president will shape how Ireland sees itself at home and abroad. Will we double down on tradition, or open up to new voices and new stories? For young people, the answer could define our sense of belonging for years to come. If we get another round of establishment candidates, expect more youth disengagement and more “why bother?” vibes. But if someone steps up who truly gets the new Ireland – who’s willing to listen, learn, and lead, this could be a turning point.

What’s Next? Get Loud or Get Left Out

With the field still open, this is our moment. Watch the debates. Ask hard questions. Organise. Share your story. Don’t let this election pass you by – make your voice impossible to ignore. Michael D. set the bar high, but it’s time for a new era. Let’s make sure the next Áras is for everyone.
